Description
This small field linhay, located immediately west of Pound Cottage in Moretonhampstead, dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed from granite rubble, with some cob in the higher sections of the rear north wall, and features a steeply pitched hipped roof made of corrugated iron. The building has a small, two-storey, single-cell rectangular plan, and was probably originally open-fronted. The ground floor front has been filled in with a granite rubble wall that includes a central stairway and one very small window on either side, both with granite lintels. The loft above is also clad in corrugated iron. At the rear north side, there is a wooden boarded lean-to extension. The interior is open without partitions, showcasing the original roof structure, which includes principal rafters that are halved and pegged at the apex, with straight collars that are halved and pegged to the faces of the principals. The cranked wall posts at the front are pegged and nailed to the feet of the principal rafters. This attractive small farm building is part of a cohesive farm group that includes Pound Cottage, its adjoining linhay, and the barn located immediately northwest of Pound Cottage.
