Description
Southbrook Farmhouse is a farmhouse, likely built in the mid-19th century. It is constructed from granite rubble and features a tiled roof, which was originally thatched. The late 19th-century ridge tiles were salvaged from a public house that was demolished in Newton Abbot. The farmhouse has a granite chimney with thatch weatherings on each gable and a double-depth plan, with the rear section covered by a catslide roof. It stands two storeys tall and has a symmetrical three-window front facing southeast. The windows are topped with two-centred granite arches and consist of three-light wooden casements, with each light containing two panes; the glazing in the window heads creates three pointed arches. Inside, ornate iron window catches are visible. The central doorway is adorned with a pent-roofed wooden hood. Although the interior was not inspected, the current owner notes that there was a fire in the house around 1936, but the wooden staircase survived. The thatched roof was replaced with slate around 1962 or 1963.
