Description
The Strickland Mausoleum, located in the churchyard about 6 meters north of the fourth bay of the north aisle of the Church of St Mary, was likely built in 1833. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a four-bay range of conjoined chest tombs. Each bay has a single-stone coped lid resting on a plain batted cornice, with plain, slightly projecting pilaster strips at the ends and bay divisions on the long sides. The ends have a cornice only and there is an applied plaque at the west end. The mausoleum is surrounded by a low, roll top plinth that originally supported iron railings. The inscriptions on the lid are in good lettering, using a mix of upper and lower case, some italic, and are repeated on the end plaque. The mausoleum contains a long series of inscriptions dedicated to the Strickland family, the first dating from 1833.
