Description
99 Church Street is a house at the end of a row, which includes a shop and was formerly a bank. It dates from the early 19th century and features Flemish bond brickwork, rendered at the front, with a tile roof and brick stacks. The building has a deep plan with three storeys and two windows. The upper floor has 12-pane sashes above 4-pane sashes, all set within Gibbsian surrounds and stone cills supported by brackets.
On the ground floor, there is a 19th-century shop front with a pilaster surround and a heavy bracketed fascia, which conceals a former three-arched front made of rusticated walling; only one arch remains on the right, containing panelled doors beneath a transom light and a blank tympanum. Above this, a string course features bold raised lettering that spells 'BANK', which is centred, suggesting there may have been additional lettering originally. The building also has a plinth, rusticated alternating quoins, a modillion cornice, a blocking course, and a coped parapet.
The roof is paired and parallel, with a large brick stack on the left gable wall that has various blocked openings. A lower wing includes a blocked carriage opening with tumbled brick voussoirs. At the back, there is a large sash window on the first floor.
Inside, the main staircase is located at the rear of the lobby to the right. It is a well-crafted early 19th-century straight flight that returns to a landing, featuring stick balusters and a swept handrail. The interior also includes various original panelled doors and elliptical or round arches over passages and entrances.
