Description
This is a house with a shop, dating from the early 16th century, with a 17th-century rear wing and a refronting in the 18th century. The property is located on the east side of High Street, Tewkesbury, and also incorporates Walls Court. It extends to the left and has a long wing facing the Court, as well as windows facing the adjoining property at No. 131.
The building has a three-room right-angle plan with a rear attic room extending over the property. It is three storeys high and has a two-window front. The windows are 9-pane over 12-pane sashes with stone cills, set within a full-width, late 19th-century shop front in three bays. This shop front incorporates the entrance to Walls Court, with two 2-pane windows over a stall riser, moulded cills and a set-back, part-glazed 19th-century door. The entrance to Walls Court is similarly detailed, with thin pilasters and a deep fascia with a moulded cornice between raking consoles. A parapet with concrete coping runs along the top of the front elevation, and a tall ridge stack sits to the right.
Approximately 1.5 metres back from the street front, within the throughway, is a fine Tudor doorway with a 4-centred head and carved spandrels within a large moulded frame, though it’s built into the partition. Inside, there are three further heavy chamfered beams to posts, along with heavy and lesser framing. An early plank door is located to the left. The framed wing towards Walls Court includes various replacement casements. The gable has a small 2-light casement above a large 3-light window, and one in the underbuild to a former jetty. Facing No. 131, there are three gabled dormers and several windows in good square-panel framing.
The interior was extensively altered in the mid-20th century. Features of note include a possible 16th-century arched-braced three-bay roof, partially obscured by boxing-in; on the second floor, a 17th-century three-plank door with strap hinges is located in the left-hand wall. On the ground floor, a side door has a fragment of 17th-century plaster ceiling above. The basement contains lateral beams and wide joists, all with stopped chamfers, alongside a large commercial bread oven. The rear attic room is reached by a 17th-century timber winder stair with early 17th-century cockshead hinges to a cupboard beneath. The attic has cambered collars, clasped purlins and tie beams on jowl posts. No.3 Walls Court was separately listed on 27th July 1973.
