Description
The Newman Monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard about 10 meters west of the center of the west end of the north aisle of the Church of St Mary. It commemorates Sarah Newman, who died in 1824. The tomb is made of stone and features indented corners, except for the pyramid top. It has a blocking course below and a sloping surface with a moulded edge leading to the lid. The design includes a fluted frieze, raised oval panels, corner paterae, and a moulded top to the plinth, with wide, square paving surrounding it. The monument also records the death of her husband in 1797 in Sandhurst. The lettering on the tomb is well-preserved, painted black, and includes some Gothic script, using a mix of upper and lower case letters, with the letter "f" used for "s".
