Description

The County Library, built in 1873 and altered in 1888, was designed by architect William Clissold and originally served as a Grammar School. The building is constructed of ashlar and features a pitched slate roof. It has three storeys, with a prominent two-storey central bay topped by a traceried parapet. The first floor has mullioned windows, while the ground floor includes a door with a hoodmould and stiffleaf label stops. On either side of the central bay, there is one range of mullioned windows, with arched heads on the ground and second floors, and polychrome relieving arches above. Each gable has a portrait bust set in a quatrefoil roundel. A square bell-cote is positioned diagonally on the roof, topped with a tiled fleche. Flanking the central bay are stairs with ashlar gate piers and iron gates. At each end of the building, there are two-storey projections with lean-to roofs, each featuring one window with polychrome relieving arches.
