Description

The School of Science and Art, built between 1890 and 1899, was designed by architects J. P. Seddon and W. H. C. Fisher. The building features rock-faced rustication with ashlar dressings and has a pitched tile roof. Its windows are arcuated with deeply moulded voussoirs, separated by colonnettes that have stiff leaf capitals. There is a gable over a slightly projecting bay facing Lansdown, a canted bay on Locking Hill, and an oriel window at the corner. The entrance includes a gabled porch supported by grouped colonnettes, with first-floor balconies on either side of the oriel. A band of carving runs below the first-floor windows, and the building is topped with a parapet and machicolations.
