Description

Iron Mills is a partly warehouse, now converted into two houses, likely dating from around 1830. The building is constructed from coursed and dressed limestone, with ashlar and concrete block rebuilt chimneys and a concrete tile roof. It is three storeys high with an attic. The front elevation features two full gables with a smaller half-gable between them, displaying a 5-window arrangement. The upper two floors have chamfered mullioned 2-light casement windows with hood moulds. Smaller 2-light windows are found in the gables of the attic. Large segmental archways provide access to the open cellar, each fitted with timber gates. The ground floor features a central segmental arched doorway, flanked by segmental arched casement windows, all set within timber frames with leaded glass. A plain upper floor band runs across the facade. Three chimneys are positioned along the ridge. A former warehouse wing is attached to the rear, at the east end. The interior remains unexamined. The building was probably constructed during the Playne family’s ownership of the mill.
