Description
The Working Horse Stables in Little Haresfield are a 17th-century structure that was extended and altered in the mid-19th century. The building is constructed from coursed and squared limestone, with a mid-19th century brick gable end on the left and a brick extension on the right. It features a plain tile roof from the 19th and 20th centuries and has a rectangular plan. The stables are a single storey with a loft.
Notable architectural features include chamfered surrounds to the central doorway and small flanking window openings. A 19th-century bay on the right has a flight of steps leading to a loft doorway, while the right gable end has an earlier flight of stone steps with a recess underneath for a dog kennel, also leading to a loft door. The rear of the building has similar 17th-century chamfered openings.
Inside, the stables have chamfered bridging beams and a front chamfer on the beam next to the hay drop. There are two pairs of raised cruck blades with tenoned collars and trenched purlins. This building is a very early surviving example of a stable, retaining original external details and internal features, including a notable raised cruck roof, although the fittings date from the late 19th century or later.
