Description

The barn at Downton Farm is a detached structure dating from the early 18th century, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It is constructed from coursed rubble limestone, with brick and concrete block outshuts, and features a stone slate roof, along with pantile and corrugated iron on the outshuts. The barn has five bays and includes projecting porches on the northwest and southeast sides.

On the southeast side, there is a central gabled porch with a timber lintel and plank doors, and the gable is rendered with a 20th-century casement. A gabled lantern is present on the columbarium, which has horizontal openings. To the right, there is an open-fronted lean-to with two segmental-arched openings behind, both fitted with plank doors. To the left, a concrete block-built cow byre features two segmental-arched metal casements. The northeast end has coursed rubble with a small casement, while the southwest end has various attached timber buildings that are not of special interest.

The northwest side has a porch that projects significantly forward and includes plank barn doors, with weatherboarding on the gable. There are lean-tos on either side of the porch. Inside, the barn has a five-bay collar and tie beam truss roof, along with a two-bay northwest porch that includes a loft.
