Description
The gatehouse to the forecourt of the Society of Friends Meeting House was built in 1834, with some alterations made in the late 19th century. It is constructed of brick with stone details and features a hipped slate roof. The building has a wide entrance to the forecourt at the east end and was extended to the west in the late 19th century to provide accommodation for a caretaker or porter.
The exterior is two storeys high and has an irregular front facing the street. The earlier section on the left has a weathered ashlar plinth on each side of the carriage archway, which has dressed stone jambs and a segmental head. Inside the archway, there are a pair of timber gates with open panels, crossed with vertical iron bars and a concave head rail. Brick pilaster strips rise to the eaves on each side of the archway. Above the arch, there is a recessed rectangular panel with an inscription framed in moulded stone. On the ground floor to the left, there is a single light window with a stone lintel and a projecting stone sill. In the late 19th century addition to the right, there is a narrow sash window, and further right, a wider sash window. On the first floor to the right, there are two widely spaced sash windows, all set in openings with stone lintels and sills. The interior has not been inspected.
