Description
The Merrick Monument is a pedestal tomb located in the churchyard about 13 metres south-west of the south-west corner of the Church of St. Michael. It dates from the 1830s and is made of stone. The tomb features a flat pyramid top with a step and a moulded edge. Three sides are plain stone, with a rectangular panel for lettering created by a double reed cut in the surface, topped with an inset segmental head. The west face is made of slate and has a single reed forming a rectangle. The corners of the monument have plain columns that lack bases or capitals, all resting on a moulded plinth. The inscriptions on the monument commemorate J. Merrick, who died in 1772, John Merrick, who died in 1829, and Robert Merrick, who died in 1837, with the last inscription located on the slate face. Some of the lettering is in italics.
