Description
Middletown Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations made in the 18th century and late 20th century. It features painted, brick-nogged timber-framing set on a random-rubble stone plinth, with some sections of painted brick walling and a tiled roof. The house is L-shaped, with a short wing that has two or three bays, and the end of the main block is on the left side facing the road. It stands two storeys tall.
The facade facing the road has a high stone plinth and a boarded door leading to the cellar on the right. Above the plinth, the timber-framing is two panels high on the ground floor and one panel high on the first floor in the wing. Most of the windows are late 20th-century casements. There is a casement window on the right, and to the left, a shaped head indicates a former doorway, with a three-light window to the left. The first-floor rail above this window is slightly lower than each side.
The left wall of the house projects forward for the main wing, featuring a corner post and a brick section with a two-light window and two studs. This wall has been rebuilt in brick to full height, forming a third of the end of the main wing, and includes a plain string course at the first-floor level. On the first floor, there is a curved brace on the right corner post leading to the wallplate, with a casement window above a blocked door. The main post to the left has curved braces on either side leading to the wallplate, with the left brace set slightly higher. There is also a two-light casement window from the 18th or early 19th century with an iron opening light.
The left wall again breaks forward for the main wing, which originally had higher eaves than the first wing and was later raised further. A three-light casement window is located in the center of the end wall. The roof is hipped at the right end, with a ridge chimney behind the blocked door and a hip at the end of the main wing, along with a projecting lateral chimney set back on the left return. The farmhouse forms a group with a nearby barn.
