Description
The War Memorial is constructed from local limestone and is situated on an octagonal platform approximately 2 meters across. The memorial features a cross that stands on a tapering, octagonal shaft with a simple moulded collar beneath. The cross has short conical terminals at the ends of its three arms and a moulded foot. It is set into a wide, octagonal drum base that has mouldings at both the top and bottom, a sloping upper surface, and recessed fields on its eight sides. One of these fields is inscribed with the text: "THIS MEMORIAL WAS / ERECTED BY PARISHIONERS / OF EBRINGTON AND OTHER / FRIENDS AND THE GROUND / ON WHICH IT STANDS WAS / GIVEN BY THE RIGHT / HONOURABLE HUGH 4TH EARL / FORTESCUE·A·D·1921." Another field reads: "IN THANKFULNESS TO / GOD AND IN GRATEFUL / MEMORY OF THE MEN OF / THIS PARISH WHO LAID / DOWN THEIR LIVES FOR / KING AND COUNTRY," with the dates "A·D·1914-1919" below it. The remaining fields list the names of ten Fallen soldiers, along with their awards and the dates they died or were reported missing. The drum base rests on a wider, octagonal plinth that has deeply moulded top and base, inscribed to honor the men of the parish who fell in World War Two: "TO THE MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO FELL IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945." Two additional sides of the plinth are inscribed with the names and titles of those commemorated, along with the years of death for each of the five Fallen. The entire structure is elevated on a platform of three plain steps.
