Description

The Forge, formerly known as The Smithy, is a building located on the north-east side of High Street. It consists of two distinct sections. The left part dates from the late 16th century and is constructed of rubble with a stone slate roof. It is a single storey with an attic and features two bays, each topped with a gable. The right bay has a wide three-light casement window with a drip mould, while the left has a modern bay with a doorway and a pent roof. Each gable contains a two-light stone mullion casement window with a drip mould, and there is a small stone ridge stack.

The right part of the building, formerly known as York House, was built in the early to mid-18th century. It is made of coursed rubble with dressed quoins and also has a stone slate roof. This section has two storeys and an attic, with one window featuring sashes with glazing bars, framed by a stone architrave with a keyed head. The doorway is pedimented, with a shouldered architrave and a triple key block, leading to a six-panel door. There is a pedimented dormer above, along with stone verges and kneelers. The end stacks are made of ashlar and have moulded strings and caps. The doorway leads into a through passage that was used as an entrance for horses. An early 19th-century watercolour of the building by T C Dibdin from 1855 is included in the Victoria County History.
