Description

High Cottages is an 18th-century detached house, later altered in the 19th century and then again in the late 20th century, and now functioning as a single house. It was originally designed with a central staircase plan, but was divided into two houses in the 19th century. It is constructed from coursed and squared rubble limestone, with a stone slate roof.

The house is two storeys with an attic. The front facade has a three-window arrangement over two storeys. A hipped porch, originally part of the 19th-century division, remains above the central doorway. The window openings contain 19th-century sash windows with plain beaded architraves and keystones. A plain band runs along the upper floor level. Ashlar chimneys with moulded caps are set on the parapet end gables. The sides of the rear wings have small-paned casement windows with stone lintels.

The rear of the house features three gable ends; the two outer gables are part of the 19th-century wings and have ridge-mounted ashlar chimneys, while the central gable is a late 20th-century infill. Each wing has a single, small-paned casement window with a stone lintel. One wing has a small brick lean-to addition. A single window on one wing has artificial stone surrounds. A 20th-century plank door is present.

The front garden is bounded by flanking stone walls and hoop-topped iron railings with a matching gate. The cottages dominate the centre of the village.
