Description

Woodbine Cottages is a pair of cottages linked by a gateway, built in the early 19th century, probably around 1820, and restored in late 1992. They are constructed from coursed limestone with dressed quoins and lintels, featuring an ashlar gateway. The cottages have hipped roofs made of Welsh slate and stone lateral stacks. Each cottage is square in plan and originally included a small service room and living room on the ground floor. They are two storeys high, with two-window fronts that have lintels over one and two-light casements with glazing bars, along with a central doorway that has been converted into a window. The central gateway is notable for its string course that connects a flat arch to flanking pilasters topped with ball finials. The lean-tos on either side were rebuilt and extended across the rear in 1992. The entrances are now located in the inner return walls. The interiors are reported to have retained some original joinery. This design of paired cottages presents a formal estate style and is situated at the rear of the former stable yard of Ivy House on High Street, having been restored to a very high standard.
