Description

53 and 61 Castle Street is a shop and estate agents with a flat above, likely dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with 19th and 20th century alterations and possibly earlier origins. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, which is now painted, and features an artificial slate roof with a rebuilt brick stack at the rear. It has two storeys and an attic, presenting a three-window range. The first floor includes three 19th century 2/2-pane sash windows set in plain reveals, along with two gabled dormers that have 19th century 2-light timber casements. The ground floor features a 20th century shopfront with a splayed entrance in the center, a glazed door, and plate glass windows on either side, as well as a 20th century half-glazed door in the middle.

At the rear right, there is a late 17th century to early 18th century wing made of limestone rubble with a Welsh slate roof, which is also two storeys and an attic. Most windows are boarded up, but one 19th century two-light timber casement is visible, along with two raking dormers that have 2-light timber casements with remnants of leaded lights on the left. A 19th century shed with a mono-pitch roof is attached to the rear, and there are further ranges of outbuildings that reportedly collapsed around 1982. Additionally, there is a 19th century brick wing at the rear left.

Inside, the building features a winder staircase that leads from the ground to the second floor, a boxed-out beam in the shop area to the left, and a heavy chamfered axial beam with run-out stops on the first floor to the right, along with a 20th century fireplace. The roof structure is not visible. This building is included for its group value.
