Description

The building at 19 and 21 Market Place is a pair of shops with offices above, dating from the late 18th century and early 19th century, although it incorporates medieval origins and later alterations. The front is faced with stucco, and the roof is covered with Welsh slate (artificial slate at the rear). There are two stone axial stacks at the rear.

The building is three storeys high with an attic, and has a five-window front. The first floor has five 2/2-pane horned sash windows in plain reveals with projecting sills. The second floor has three late 18th/early 19th century 3/3-pane sash windows to the left and two 19th-century 2/2-pane horned sashes to the right, all in plain reveals with projecting sills. The ground floor has two shop fronts. The shop front on the left (No.19) is in an early 19th century style, with windows with glazing bars flanking a central glazed door. The door surround has pilasters with re-used 19th-century Corinthian capitals, a frieze with a blind box, and a moulded timber cornice. The shop front on the right (No.21) is a 20th-century aluminium shop front with a glazed door leading to offices on the upper floors. There are two hipped dormers with 20th-century two-light windows. The eaves have a timber modillion cornice. A 20th-century single-storey extension has been added to the rear.

The interior of No. 21 includes a 6-panel door with glazed panels in a reeded architrave, with a decorative fanlight featuring early 19th-century coloured glazing in the entrance hall. There is also a 19th-century six-panel door in a moulded timber architrave leading to the first-floor landing. The first-floor rooms have 19th-century marble fireplaces, with arched niches flanking either side, the one on the right forming a doorway to a rear room. Cornice runs along the front right room, while the front left room has a reeded cornice and a 20th-century fireplace. A small stone fireplace is now located in a passage to the rear left. The second floor has two raised-and-fielded panel doors to the front right rooms, with boxed-out beams. In the roof space of the rear wing, two bays of the roof structure are partially visible, featuring a post and rafter truss with a stub tie beam and curved windbraces; the collar and structure above are concealed by a later ceiling. Arch braces are believed to have been removed. There are probable remains of the roof of the hall behind the front range, which has now been rebuilt.
