Description

Bourton Bridge is a bridge located on the boundary of the parishes of Cold Aston, Bourton-on-the-Water, and Lower Slaughter. It was built in 1806 and widened in 1959. The bridge is constructed of ashlar stone and features a parapet with roll-moulded capping that rises to a gentle point at the center of the span, terminating in octagonal piers with bell-shaped cappings. It has three slightly pointed arches that span the River Windrush within a 'Tudor'-arched recess, along with weathered breakwaters. The east side of the bridge, which faces Bourton, retains the original masonry, while the west side was altered to create a wider carriageway in 1959. A stone plaque by T.S. Chant on the east side below the bridge parapet commemorates the widening. This bridge is historically significant, having been an important crossing point first bridged by the Romans and featuring a stone structure since 1483.
