Description

The range comprising a former stable, barn, and adjoining cottage at Turkdean Manor is likely a former stable and barn with a semi-detached cottage, located within the grounds of Turkdean Manor. The barns date from the late 18th century, while the cottage was probably converted from an outbuilding in the early 20th century.

The barns are constructed of coursed squared and dressed limestone with a stone slate roof, while the cottage features limestone rubble, a stone slate roof, and an ashlar stack. The overall layout of the range forms an 'L'-shaped plan. The barn closest to Turkdean Manor is two storeys high and has access to the loft through a plank door with fillets set within a basket-headed surround, reached by a single flight of stone steps on the side facing Turkdean Manor. There is a similar door and surround on the ground floor to the right of the steps, which has a flat hood supported by moulded stone brackets.

High up in the left gable end of the barn, there is a two-light stone-mullioned casement with diamond-leaded panes, along with a pigeon loft above. The right gable end features a small two-light stone-mullioned casement. The barn includes a gabled projecting porch on the right, which has decorative timber framing in its gable. There are garage doors with fillets that once formed a double-width opening opposite the porch, now blocked, with a 6-light late 19th to early 20th century stone-mullioned casement featuring stilted heads, carved spandrels, a stopped hood, and leaded panes inserted in the blocking.

The converted outbuilding projects forward to the right of the gabled porch and has an early 20th-century plank door with fillets towards the gable end, alongside a 3-light window with a transom to the left and another 3-light window with a transom to the right, both with stopped hoods above. The cottage has a 20th-century two-light casement to the left and a two-light tile-hung dormer from the eaves above. There is also a raking 2-light roof dormer with diamond-leaded panes on the right, and 20th-century single and two-light stone-mullioned casements in the right gable end. The cottage features axial and gable end stacks with moulded capping. The interior has not been inspected.
