Description

The East banqueting house of Old Campden House, built between 1612 and 1627 for Sir John Baptist Hicks, is a significant example of early 17th-century architecture. It is one of a pair of buildings flanking Old Campden House and showcases a fretted Flemish-inspired Baroque style. The structure is made of fine quality ashlar with a Cotswold stone roof.

The main storey opens onto a grand terrace, with two lower storeys, the lower of which is vaulted. Notable features include a pierced strapwork parapet and corner pinnacles adorned with strapwork panels, as well as spiral chimney columns topped with cut finials. The building has five bays, with an arcaded design (partly blocked) featuring jewel-motif imposts. The central bay is larger and contains the original panelled door, which has radial panelling in the tympanum. The side arcades originally had flat balustrades, now blocked.

There are steps leading up to a small stone balustraded balcony on the north side. The main floor features Perpendicular-inspired windows on the north and east sides, with three-light mullioned windows and a continuous string course on the lower floors. Two stepped buttresses are located on the north side, and there are Tudor arch doorways. The building underwent partial restoration around 1900 but was in poor condition at the time of the last survey. It is a rare and important survival of early 17th-century country house life and exemplifies this exuberant architectural style.
