Description

The Old Priory and attached walls, piers, and gate is a former presbytery built in 1881, likely by Boultons of Cheltenham. It features coursed, squared limestone rubble over brick, with dressed quoins and a concealed roof, and includes an iron gate. This building is designed in the Gothic Revival style and has two storeys with two first-floor windows. The angles are marked by quoins, and there is a central off-set buttress with a niche at the first floor that holds a statue of St Gregory. A moulded band runs along the first floor. The windows are similar, featuring two-cusped lights with mullions and transoms; the ground floor windows have a quatrefoil in the head and are inscribed with 'Jesus' and 'Maria', complete with hoodmoulds. The first-floor windows have the date displayed in roundels above and voussoirs. The entrance is set back to the right and features a plank door, linking the building to St Gregory's Church. The interior has not been inspected.

The subsidiary features include a coursed limestone wall on the left that is approximately 2 meters high, with double-chamfered coping. The wall returns along the front facade and is about 1 meter high with chamfered coping, extending for approximately 10 meters to square piers that have trefoiled heads. The gate has a panelled lower stage topped with spearhead bars. Historically, this building served as the presbytery for the Roman Catholic Church of St Gregory, which was designed by C Hanson between 1854 and 1857 and completed by Boultons of Cheltenham with builder Mr Acock of Cheltenham. The Old Priory abuts the Church of St Gregory located in St James's Square.
