Description
The Battishill chest tomb, located approximately 4 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Mary, dates from 1733 and commemorates William Battishill. It is constructed of red brick with a grey basalt lid. The tomb is rectangular in shape with plain sides, featuring a central projecting string course and a soffit-chamfered cornice, topped by a plain flat lid. The lid is inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, noting the death of William Battishill in 1733. Additionally, there is a secondary slate plaque on the north side, also inscribed in similar lettering, which records the deaths of another William, who was the nephew of the first, in 1760, and his wife Mary in 1778. The use of brick for this tomb in 1733 is notably early for this part of Devon.
