Description
Sourton Down Cross is a wayside cross that may have originally been an early Christian stone, which was converted to a cross in late medieval times. It is made of roughly squared granite and features a Latin cross with very short arms. The shaft of the cross has an inscription that runs in three lines downwards, but it is mostly illegible. It has been interpreted as a personal name preceded by a title of authority, along with a symbol of Christianity. Additionally, the cross has later inscriptions of the initials of Hatherleigh, Okehampton, Tavistock, and Launceston on its various faces, serving as a guide-post.
