Description

Palmer's Farm is a farmhouse dating from the late 17th century, with an attached barn from the 18th century and some 19th-century additions. The building features rendered stone rubble and cob walls, topped with a wood shingle roof that is gabled at the left end and hipped at the right. The barn extension has a gable-ended corrugated iron roof. A large central axial stack made of rendered rubble is present.

Originally, the farmhouse had a two or three-room layout, with two larger heated rooms on either side of a central axial stack, which contains back-to-back fireplaces. A small unheated service room is located at the left end, providing access to the house. The stairs are situated at the rear of the stack, likely in their original position. The barn, added to the left end, is lower than the main structure.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical front with two windows. The first floor features 20th-century casements, with two-lights and five-lights on the left and right, respectively, while the ground floor has three-lights and a single-light window. On the ground floor to the left, there is a 20th-century plank door. An early 19th-century outshut is attached to the front wall on the right side, with a similar outshut at the centre on the rear elevation.

The attached barn retains a likely 18th-century timber window on the right side of the ground floor, which has a central chamfered mullion and a wooden stanchion bar. To the left of this window is a plank door, followed by a two-light 19th-century timber window with a square-section mullion. There is also a first-floor window to the right of centre.

Inside, the central room features a fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel that has run-out stops. The cross beams in this room are insubstantial and lightly chamfered, also with run-out stops. On the left side of the fireplace, there is a built-in original settle with a decorative finial on its arm-rest. A stud and boarded partition separates the central room from the small service room, with a chamfered head beam on the side of the larger room.

This small farmhouse retains several original simple internal features and remains relatively unaltered.
