Description

The Martin headstone, dated 1815, is located approximately 5 metres east-south-east of the chancel of the Church of St Michael in Spreyton. This headstone commemorates John Martin and is made of slate. It stands about 1.4 metres high and features an upright slab with a shaped head. The front is adorned with a reeded border, and at the top, there are carvings of a pair of angels holding an orb, which has a short quotation inscribed on it. Below this, the first word of the inscription is presented in Gothic lettering, followed by Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, including some italicized text. The inscription notes the deaths of John Martin in 1815 and his wife Elizabeth in 1805. The headstone is signed by W. Carwithen of South Tawton.
