Description

This is a pair of adjacent headstones, located approximately 12 metres south-south-east of the chancel of the Church of St Giles. Both headstones date from the 18th century and commemorate members of the Alford family. They are made of slate.

The eastern headstone is the earlier of the two, featuring a square head and standing about 150 millimetres high. It is decorated on both sides with a well-carved winged cherub's head flanked by scrolled designs, and the inscription is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, although most of it is buried. The name of John Alford is visible on the east side.

The western headstone has a shaped head and is adorned with an incised frame supported by columns on the front. The first letter of the inscription is ornamental, while the remainder is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the death of Martha Alford in 1758. The rear of this headstone is inscribed in memory of John Alford, who died in 1793, and features a simple cusped frame.
