Description

The gate piers located approximately 3 metres east of the East Lodge serve as the entrance to Stevenstone Park. They were built around 1872-1873, during the time when the Honourable Mark George Kerr Rolle was reconstructing Stevenstone House. The piers are made of sandstone ashlar and are tall, flanking the carriageway. They are square in shape, resting on chamfered plinths, and feature moulded cornices topped with large limestone carvings of sitting lions. Each lion holds a shield that is carved with the Rolle arms. To the left, there is a pedestrian walkway marked by a lower square-section pier capped with a low pyramid. This walkway still has the original wooden gate, which includes decorative cross braces, while the carriageway gate has been replaced in the 20th century.
