Description
The retaining walls, railings, and steps located approximately 8 metres to the east of Abbot's Hill Farmhouse date from the early 19th century, with alterations made in the mid to late 19th century. The structure features stone rubble walls topped with slate copings and includes slate steps. One flight of steps has been rebuilt using gault brick. The railings are made of painted wrought iron and cast iron.
The walls serve to retain the farmyard above the garden adjacent to the farmhouse, with steps integrated into the design on both the south and north sides. The east wall is topped with mid to late 19th-century cast-iron railings that have a circular-section spearhead design, dog bars, and circular standards with scrolled stanchions at the base. The southern flight of steps features a balustrade from the early 19th century, consisting of circular-section wrought-iron railings (two per tread), a tapered circular foot newel, standards, and a plain handrail. The northern flight of steps has a balustrade on one side only, with similar circular-section railings and a plain handrail that is scrolled at the foot.
