Description

Southdown is a house dating from the mid to late 17th century, with some alterations made around 1900. It is built with a rendered exterior, likely over stone rubble and cob, and has a thatched, gable-ended roof. Rendered end stacks are present. The original plan was a two-room central-entrance layout facing south, with a central hall that serves as a staircase and integral end stacks to the left and right. A shallow, full-height projection is centrally placed at the front. A rear outshut was raised by one storey around 1900.

The exterior presents a symmetrical three-bay frontage with a central break. It features small-paned wooden casement windows dating to around 1900. The central doorway has a circa 1900 half-glazed, four-panelled door, with the lower panels being beaded and flush, and the upper panels glazed. A thatched, hipped-roof rustic porch was added in the 20th century.

Internally, the house was remodelled around 1900, including the introduction of a staircase in the entrance hall. Panelled doors with moulded architraves are found throughout. Both ground-floor rooms have picture rails. The right-hand ground-floor room contains a fireplace dating to around 1900, with ceramic tiles and a wooden chimney-piece. The first-floor rooms and roofspace were not inspected.
