Description
The Tanton headstone, located approximately 4 metres south-east of the porch of the Church of St Giles, is a small headstone dated 1797 in memory of Daniel Tanton. It is an upright square-headed slab standing about 300 millimetres high. The front of the headstone features an inscription in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, which tells a tragic and cautionary story: "In memory of Daniel Tanton. By firing off a gun it burst the breach of which sunk in his head where it remained 9 weeks, on extraction of which he expired, ye 20th of January 1797, Aged 17 years."
