Description
The terrace walls, built around 1872-1873 by the Honourable Mark George Kerr Rolle, are located approximately 19 metres south and 24 metres east of Stevenstone House. Constructed from snecked local stone, the walls feature slightly-rusticated ashlar quoins, a sandstone ashlar balustrade, and coping. The walls are part of a terrace that overlooks the former deer park to the south-south-west.
The terrace drops into the deer park about 19 metres south, where it is supported by the wall featuring a stone balustrade. The design includes alternate bays that slightly project forward. To the west, the terrace curves into a quadrant around the former croquet lawn, leading to a gateway that connects to an internal flight of steps up to the deer park. This area also meets a ha ha, which is listed separately along with the garden walls.
At the eastern end, a flight of steps descends from the terrace to the deer park, and the wall continues northwards towards Stevenstone Court, which were the service buildings for the main house. The exterior of the revetment walls showcases a balustrade made of stone ashlar splat balusters, which are separated by broad piers that are recessed in the center. The gate piers leading to the deer park are square with flat caps and hold the original cast iron gates, featuring twisted rails with fleur-de-lys finials and alternate rails extending to mid-height.
