Description

No. 2 Bridgeland Street is a house that has been converted into two houses with shops. It may have originally been part of a larger house that included No. 3. The building dates back to 1692 and was likely remodeled, with No. 3 being divided off in 1806. It features a solid rendered front and a slate roof, with a rendered chimney at the center of the ridge. The structure is two storeys high with a garret and has a four-window range.

On the ground floor, there is a round-arched early 19th-century doorway to the left, flanked by fluted pilasters that support an entablature. The doorway has panelled reveals and a half-glazed late 19th-century door. To the right of the doorway is a 19th-century display window, also with fluted pilasters and a cornice on paired brackets. At the far right is a simple late 19th or early 20th-century shop front with a half-glazed door.

The second storey features box-framed sash windows with six over six panes, and there are two hipped dormers with mid to late 20th-century wooden casements. This building is likely part of a new house leased in 1692 by the Bridge Feoffees to William Hopkins, a merchant from Bideford, which was originally intended to have a 64-foot frontage, significantly larger than the current structure. The building has been reported to have suffered significant fire damage within living memory.
