Description

30 Bridgeland Street is a house, dating from 1692, which was remodelled in the late 18th century. It originally formed part of a larger house which included numbers 31 and 32, and is now a shop with flats above. The front is of solid rendering, while the left wall of the rear section is original late 17th century work. The ground floor of this rear section is of stone rubble, and the upper floor is of brick, with a raised band at first-floor level. The roof is slate, with an old red-brick chimney on the left party wall of the front section.

The house has a double-depth plan, with one room wide and a staircase between the front and back rooms. The rear section was likely the wing of an original U-shaped house, with the opposing wing now part of number 32. The building is three storeys high, with the rear section being two storeys with a garret. It has a two-window front. A shop front, likely 19th century and much rebuilt, occupies the ground floor, alongside a late 18th century six-panelled door to the left. Upper-floor windows are 6-paned sashes set in slightly recessed box frames. A moulded wooden eaves cornice runs along the top.

Inside, the ground floor has been altered, but the entrance passage retains late 18th century two-fillet ovolo-moulded panelling. At the rear of the building, likely in a later addition, is a wide fireplace with a 19th century iron basket grate. The staircase has been altered, but the flight rising to the first floor retains some slender late 18th century turned balusters with square necking-pieces, and a rounded handrail ramped up at the top over a column-newel. The upper-floor rooms were not inspected, except for the entirely plain garret rooms at the rear.
