Description

West Libbear Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid-17th century, with possible additions from the 19th century. It features rendered cob and rubble walls and a gable-ended slate roof, supported by three brick stacks—one at each end and one in the middle. The original layout likely consisted of a two-room-and-through-passage plan, with a hall on the lower right side and a stack backing onto the passage, while the lower room was heated by the end stack. The inner room on the right is probably a 19th-century addition, formerly an outbuilding, and there is also a 19th-century outshut at the rear.

The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has five windows, featuring mid to late 20th-century two, three, and four-light diamond leaded pane casements. The left end of the house is slightly recessed, and a 20th-century conservatory extends along most of the front, with glazed doors at each end.

Inside, the left-hand room has two chamfered ceiling beams with straight-cut stops. The old lintel over the fireplace has been cut into, likely to accommodate a range. There is a headbeam from an original partition between this room and the passage, with one surviving plank. The hall fireplace features a chamfered wooden lintel with hollow step stops and similar ceiling beams. Two original roof trusses remain over the hall, characterized by slightly curved feet and cranked collars that are halved in with notched joints, along with trenched purlins.
