Description
This headstone, dated 1793, is located approximately 35 metres south-south-west of the tower of the Church of St Giles in the Wood. It commemorates Mary Ireland and is made of slate. The upright slab stands about 1.4 metres high and features a shaped head. The inscription is framed by fluted pilasters on either side, with a segmental arch above made of tiny circles. At the top, there is a carving of the sun, with a star motif on the left and a crescent moon on the right. The inscription is in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, with the first word being ornamental. It records the death of Mary Ireland in 1793, as well as Thomas, Hannah, and William, although no dates are provided for them. This stone has been repositioned to its current location.
