Description
A barn, horse engine house, covered entrance and former stables, likely dating from the early 18th century, with minor alterations and additions in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The building is constructed of cob on a stone rubble plinth, with gable-ended corrugated-iron and asbestos roofing (formerly thatched). Some additions are of squared snecked stone with red brick dressings and Welsh slate roofs.
The range of buildings faces a farmyard to the east, situated on ground that slopes to the right. The 18th-century barn is located to the left, featuring opposed cart entrances and a square-ended horse engine house projecting at a right angle from its right-hand end. A circa 1900 lean-to addition is situated in front of the right-hand end of the barn. To the right is a lower 18th-century range, comprising a covered farmyard entrance and a former stable (now a milking parlour), with another lean-to addition constructed around 1900 in front.
The barn's left-hand entrance has a pair of large plank doors (the right-hand door being two-leaf), with a wooden lintel. Two narrow vents are located to the left of the entrance, one of which is blocked. A circa 1900 lean-to addition is present to the right of the entrance, featuring two doorways. A triangular owlhole is found in the gable end of the barn’s left-hand side. The rear of the barn also has a pair of plank doors. The right-hand range incorporates the covered farmyard entrance, open to the eaves, with flanking stone piers and wooden lintels. The former stable has a row of five pigeon nesting holes below the eaves. A small circa 1900 lean-to addition is situated in front of the stable.
Inside the barn, the 18th-century roof consists of seven bays with pegged trusses, featuring straight principals and lap-jointed collars. The horse engine house retains a substantial spine beam and some line shafting. The roof of the right-hand range also has an 18th-century structure with straight principals and collars.
The building forms part of a complete farmstead group, including Great Barlington Farmhouse and a range of shippons. It holds group value in this context.
