Description
There are three adjacent headstones located approximately 30 metres south-south-west of the tower of the Church of St Giles, dating from the 18th century. All three are upright square-headed slabs made of late slate.
The left headstone is about 450 millimetres high, featuring carved winged cherub heads at the front top corners above a nowy-headed panel, which is flanked by wavy stems with leaves. The inscription, in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, commemorates Michael Cooke, who died in 1747.
The right headstone stands around 500 millimetres high and has a simple incised frame. It bears a poetic epitaph praising "a tender mother, a virtuous wife," but it does not include a name or date. This headstone partially covers a larger 18th-century headstone that is approximately 700 millimetres high. The centre of this headstone features a carved winged cherub's head, flanked by scrolled decoration, with rosettes below each side and wavy lines running down each side. The inscription, also in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, records the death of Rebecca Snell, although the date is obscured.
On the back of this larger headstone, there is a crude egg-and-dart frame surrounding an inscription that notes the death of Michael Snell in 1810. These three headstones have been repositioned to their current location.
