Description

The Elms is a villa dating to the mid-19th century, built in a classical style. It has stucco walls, brick stacks with moulded caps, and a hipped slate roof with projecting graduated eaves. The building was originally planned with two depths, featuring a central stairhall and large principal rooms on either side of the front, with smaller service rooms likely situated at the rear.

The villa presents a symmetrical facade with five bays. The central bay is gabled and features a painted and plastered archway with Corinthian pilasters rising the full height, set upon quoins at the entrance floor level. Original 12-pane sash windows are recessed on the first floor, with glazing bars and panelled pilasters supporting cornices. The outer bay windows include sidelights, and the central window is round-arched with a bay. The ground floor windows are architraved and have segmented pediments, with splayed bay windows on the outer bays. A projecting central porch has a round-arched architrave flanked by console brackets. Arcaded conservatories are positioned at the left and right ends of the house; the right-hand one is a late 20th-century reconstruction. Later 19th-century extensions and additions are at the rear. Inside, an arched Gothic staircase window with geometric tracery is present, alongside original fireplaces, cornices and joinery.
