Description

This is a house, likely built in 1642 and remodelled around the 1850s. It is located in Highweek Village, near Newton Abbot. The house is faced with painted render and has a hipped slate roof with substantial external chimney stacks on the returns. It originally comprised two units, with a former rear left wing that has been altered and is now a separate dwelling. A short rear right wing is also present. The front elevation is symmetrical, with a three-window arrangement. There are 6/6-pane sash windows with reeded architraves and roundel blocks to the upper corners. The front door is a four-panel design and is sheltered by a glazed verandah supported by timber posts. Internally, oak lintels are visible above open fireplaces in the returns. The right-hand room contains a small cupboard door with raised panels at the rear. The short rear right wing, dating to the 19th century, features a small, 17th-century open fireplace in the rear right corner. The cupboard may have been a smoking cupboard connected to this fireplace. The studwork of the 19th-century central staircase includes some rough timber alongside sawn timber. A working well is located in the rear right wing. The house presents an intact 19th-century facade built onto earlier foundations.
