Description
Old Bow Bridge is a bridge dating from the late 17th century or possibly earlier, constructed of granite rubble. It features a single, slightly pointed arch, with roughly shaped voussoirs on each side. The bridge has rough parapets, which are likely rebuilt, but the downstream side has a parapet that is slightly corbelled over the head of the arch and extends a short distance to the south-west. On the inner face of the downstream parapet, facing the road, there is a tablet made of Devonian limestone with a badly worn inscription that appears to read: "THIS BRIDGE REPARED..COUMTY IN 1698" (though it could also be 1688). There seem to be some names at the bottom of the inscription. According to G. Jones, the bridge was widened to its current width of 12 feet in 1812, although there is no clear structural evidence of this alteration. Approximately 140 meters to the north-east, on the south-east side of Love Lane, there is a boundary stone that marks the extent of the roadway leading to the bridge, which was to be maintained by the county; this stone is separately listed.
