Description
This listing describes a row of four cottages, including Rose Cottage, Jasmine Cottage, and Howell Cottage, which are attached at the southeast end. The cottages date from the 17th to the 18th century and are likely of slightly varying construction. They feature rendered rubble walls and a hipped scantle slate roof, while Howell Cottage has a gable-ended slate roof. There are four substantial rendered rubble stacks; Howell Cottage has a gable end stack, and there are stacks at either end of the row, with an axial stack to the left of center that appears to have two builds.
Originally, these cottages were likely single-depth, one-room plan homes built back to back, although they may not have all been constructed at the same time. Howell Cottage is a separate build, probably dating from the late 17th or early 18th century, and also has a one-room plan. The cottages are two storeys high with an asymmetrical east front.
Rose Cottage, at the right end, has a two-window front featuring early 20th-century three-light casements with glazing bars. There is a 20th-century plank door to the right under a heavy slate porch hood. Green Valley Cottage, located in the center, has a 20th-century plank door to the left under a porch hood, with a three-light early 20th-century casement to the right and a two-light window above the door, both with glazing bars. Jasmine Cottage, on the far left, has 20th-century two-light casements with glazing bars on both the ground and first floors, with the door located on the opposite side.
Howell Cottage projects at right angles from the left-hand side and has a one-window front featuring late 20th-century three-light casements with glazing bars and a 19th-century plank door to the right under a porch hood. The interiors of Rose Cottage and Green Valley Cottage were inspected. Rose Cottage displays 18th-century features, including insubstantial rough beams and two fireplaces in the principal room, suggesting it was formerly two cottages. One fireplace has a rough stone arch, while the other has a plain timber arch. Green Valley Cottage features a 17th-century fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel that has hollow step stops. The roof space was not inspected. Overall, these cottages maintain a traditional and attractive external appearance.
