Description
The Dawlish War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1921, with additional names added following later conflicts. It is made of grey Devonshire granite and features bronze and polished marble plaques.
The memorial consists of a square base topped by a square two-tier plinth, a square shaft, and a Latin cross. The original dedication is on a bronze plaque on the north face of the top tier of the plinth, which reads: ‘ERECTED/TO THE MEMORY OF/ THE MEN OF DAWLISH/ WHO FELL DURING THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918’. The names of those who fell in the First World War are listed on a bronze plaque below and on the west face. The east face includes a bronze plaque that commemorates those who died during the Second World War. Additionally, two polished-marble plaques have been added to the south face of the plinth to honor members of the armed forces who have died in conflicts since 1945, with the dedication: ’THOSE WHO HAVE/ FALLEN FIGHTING FOR/ FREEDOM IN THE/ BRITISH ARMED FORCES/ SINCE 1945’.
