Description
The Parish Church of St Gregory is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Street in Dawlish. The church features a medieval tower, while the rest of the structure was rebuilt in 1824 by Andrew Patey, with further alterations made between 1873 and 1875. The west tower is constructed of sandstone and consists of two stages, topped with an octagonal turret, crenellated crockets, and waterspouts. The 1824 additions are made of stone rubble and include a six-bay nave, transept, north and south aisles, and a south porch, all featuring traceried windows. Inside, the church houses a notable collection of wall tablets from the late 18th century to early 19th century, commemorating individuals who died while visiting the popular resort of Dawlish, including a Flaxman memorial dedicated to Frances Mary Hamlet. These tablets have recently been repositioned on a modern structure. The church also features a Victorian tessellated reredos. The churchyard contains several 18th-century chest tombs and headstones.
