Description
SX 86 NE ABBOTSKERSWELL MAIN STREET Abbotskerswell 3/26 Mote House - GV II House, originally farmhouse. Probably C16 with C17 alterations, extended probably in C19 and considerably modernised in C20. Rendered rubble walls. Hipped asbestos slate roof. Large projecting rendered rubble lateral stack at the front and similar stack at rear. Originally 3 room and through-passage plan with hall and lower room (to the right) heated by rear and front lateral stacks respectively. 1 room extension at lower end probably C19. Re-fenestrated, passage removed, stairs inserted and doors blocked, and room arrangements altered in c. mid C20. 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 5 window front of c. mid C20 2-light casements which have 2 top opening lights. Former enclosed gabled porch towards left end now has window on the front. Projecting stack to right of centre beyond which is C20 glazed door under gabled porch hood. To the right of that is the extension which is recessed. Interior: The lower room fireplace has a chamfered wooden lintel with hollow step stops and an oven in the right-hand side. To the left of the fireplace above the present door is a chamfered wooden lintel also with hollow step stops, this would originally have been for a window. A photograph of this house at the turn of the century shows it thatched with old leaded casement windows and the original round-headed wooden doorframe to the left of the front lateral stack.
