Description

Mote House is a house that was originally a farmhouse, likely built in the 16th century with alterations from the 17th century. It was extended, probably in the 19th century, and underwent significant modernization in the 20th century. The exterior features rendered rubble walls and a hipped asbestos slate roof. There are large projecting rendered rubble stacks at both the front and rear of the house. The original layout consisted of three rooms and a through-passage plan, with a hall and a lower room heated by the lateral stacks. A one-room extension was added at the lower end, likely in the 19th century.

In the mid-20th century, the house was re-fenestrated, the passage was removed, stairs were inserted, doors were blocked, and the room arrangements were altered. The house is two storeys high with an asymmetrical front that has five windows, featuring mid-20th century two-light casements with two top opening lights. The former enclosed gabled porch on the left now has a window, and there is a projecting stack to the right of the center, beyond which is a 20th-century glazed door under a gabled porch hood. The extension to the right is recessed.

Inside, the lower room has a fireplace with a chamfered wooden lintel that has hollow step stops and an oven on the right side. Above the current door to the left of the fireplace is another chamfered wooden lintel with hollow step stops, which would have originally been for a window. A photograph from the turn of the century shows the house thatched, with old leaded casement windows and the original round-headed wooden doorframe to the left of the front lateral stack.
