Description
The Foss chest tomb, located approximately 3 metres south of the Church of St Mary in Dipford, dates from the early to mid 19th century. It is constructed from slate and limestone. The tomb features a moulded slate plinth and a moulded slate lid that does not have an inscription. There are two slate panels on each side and one panel at each end, all separated by limestone pilasters at the sides and corners. Each slate panel contains an engraved moulded oval with inscriptions in memory of various members of the Foss family, with the earliest being Mary, who died in 1834, the wife of John Langworthy Foss. The tomb is heavily overgrown with ivy.
