Description

Woolston Place is a house from the early 19th century located in West Alvington. It features coursed slate stone rubble walls that are rendered at the gable ends, and has a gable-ended slate roof with overhanging eaves. There are rendered brick stacks at each gable end. The original plan was double depth, with one room on either side of a central hall, although some internal partitions have been removed and there is a 20th-century rear addition.

The exterior is two storeys high and has an almost symmetrical front with three windows, featuring early 19th-century 16-pane hornless sashes, except for a 20th-century imitation on the ground floor to the right. Dressed stone flat arches sit above the windows. The centre of the house has what is likely the original six-panel door, which is complemented by a restored open porch with a flat hood supported by fluted columns and pilasters.

At the rear, two original sashes remain, while the rest of the windows are from the 20th century. There is a single-storey, flat-roofed 20th-century wing that includes a tall garden retaining wall to the southeast, which borders the road on two sides. This wall features a gateway in a semi-circular recess at the corner and divided steps with iron railings leading to a gate flanked by square rubble piers. The interior was inaccessible during the survey but is likely to contain original joinery, such as panelled doors and a staircase.
