Description
Sherford Down Farmhouse is a farmhouse built between 1820 and 1830. It is constructed from slatestone rubble and features a double depth shallow pitched hipped slate roof. There are rendered brick stacks at each end of the house and another brick stack for the rear service range. The layout consists of a double depth plan that is two rooms wide but not entirely symmetrical. The two main rooms are located at the front and rear on the left side and are interconnected. The front room opens from the entrance hall, which has a smaller room at the front on the opposite side. A narrow staircase runs alongside the hall, and a passage leads from the back of the hall to a back door, with a kitchen to the right. A service wing, likely built around the same time, extends from the right-hand end of the house and includes a dairy, pantry, and more.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical three-window front featuring original 16-pane sash windows that are taller on the ground floor and have brick surrounds. There is a central Doric porch with fluted columns and a deep flat hood, which has been glazed in on the sides and includes a glazed door with a panelled door behind it. The service range is set back from the right-hand end of the front and has a flimsy 20th-century addition at the front. The rear elevation mirrors the front but has a central six-panel door. The service wing also has 16-pane sashes and features a large late 19th-century lean-to at its end.
Inside, the farmhouse retains much of its original joinery, including panelled doors and shutters, a built-in settle and cupboard in the kitchen, and a very simple staircase. The two principal rooms have simple moulded cornices, while the smaller front room has a moulded ceiling band. The entrance hall features a modillion cornice with a trailing vine motif. There is a marble chimneypiece in the front left-hand room. This farmhouse is a well-preserved example of Regency architecture.
